The Birth of Beef Jerky E-mail
Beef jerky has once again become very popular in the past few years because of the low carb craze that has hit the nation. In jerky, the fat needs to be trimmed to prevent the beef from going bad. As a result, there is much more of the beef than the fat in jerky, which it makes it very high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This is good news to the legions of people that follow the Atkin’s diet.

If you are looking for a healthy and convenient snack to take anywhere, then you should give beef jerky a try. It is great for camping because it is compact, gives the needed nutrients, tastes great, and does not go bad.
People that like to got outdoors carry beef jerky for these reasons and because it is also light and easy to carry. They often put in vacuum sealed packaging to pack in the freshness so that it will stay fresh for a very long time.

Beef jerky originated from South America and was brought to North America during the 1800’s. The Quechua tribe of Indians made a product similar to beef jerky which they called ch’arki which is where the name jerky came from. They used elk, deer, and buffalo meat and added salt to them. Then they dried it out under the sun or placed the meat over the fire. They preserved meat in order to have food during periods of famine or drought.

The Spaniards also began to make this product when they inhabited parts of South America and then introduced it worldwide. Beef jerky became the staple food for American cowboys and the early pioneers on the frontier. The early explorers of the country would cut strips of meat to be smoked in smoke huts. They added spices to the meat to improve its taste.

People who are wary of what they are eating and are looking for low-cost healthy foods are now turning to beef jerky. It’s a great snack for adults and kids alike and everyone has to admit that it is better tasting than most high fat treat.
